Britannia Waves the Rules Gareth Farr

Carl doesn't fit in at home. He doesn’t fit in anywhere. When he signs up for the army, he sees it as a chance to escape the grim reality of life in his hometown. But the army takes him to Afghanistan. And when he comes home, it’s not as a war hero but as a changed man.

Gareth Farr’s arresting debut play looks at conflict and how it plays out at home for soldiers who, when they return from a war zone, have to try and fit back into a society that doesn’t know how to cope with them; and a society that they don’t know how to cope with. Gareth Farr’s brave and angry play was one of the winners of the 2011 Bruntwood Prize, the UK’s biggest award for playwrights. It receives its world premiere at Manchester’s prestigious Royal Exchange Theatre.
