Caryl Phillips: Plays One
Caryl Phillips

Plays One brings together for the first time three plays by Caryl Phillips written in the 1980s: Strange Fruit, Where There is Darkness and The Shelter.

Strange Fruit (1981) – a powerful study of a black family caught between two cultures

Where There is Darkness (1982) – the story of a West Indian man, Albert Williams, on the eve of his return for the Caribbean after twenty-five years, grappling with the history of his past in Britain.

The Shelter (1984) – explores the relationship between a black man and a white woman. The first half of the play is set on a desert island in the late eighteenth century while the second half takes place in 1950s London.

Phillips' poignant examinations of black identity and race relations prove to be as relevant today as they were when they were written nearly forty years ago.
